Why Unani Medicine is important?
With the revolution and booming
advancement of medical science, although many incurable and life threatening
diseases are controlled and treated successfully by conventional allopathic
medicine, there are still many thirst areas of illnesses and maladies where
modern medical system has failed almost completely. Further, cost increment,
dependency on diagnostic machineries and poor clinical diagnostic trends are
heavy burden on poor public living in the developing countries. Antibiotic
resistance, increasing adverse effects and symptomatic rather than curative
efficacy of allopathic system are again disappointing and made the public seek
an alternative medical system. Governments in such countries are now reviving
there older systems of medicine to overcome these lacunas fulfilling the basic
health care needs.
Unani medicine founded by
Hippocrates, developed much in Arabic countries during 8th to 14th
centuries, travelled through Iran to India. It was propagated by Mughal empires
here and gained a good fame. Still adhering to principles of Hippocartic
medicine, it uses world wide range of naturally occurring drugs viz. herbal,
animal and mineral origin. Apart from drugs, multiple therapeutic Unani regimenal
procedures also play an important role in the management of varied ailments. It
is the high time to rediscover its time-tested classical form and research the
molecular basis of this pathy, using present tools and techniques.
