Why Unani Medicine is important?


With the revolution and booming advancement of medical science, although many incurable and life threatening diseases are controlled and treated successfully by conventional allopathic medicine, there are still many thirst areas of illnesses and maladies where modern medical system has failed almost completely. Further, cost increment, dependency on diagnostic machineries and poor clinical diagnostic trends are heavy burden on poor public living in the developing countries. Antibiotic resistance, increasing adverse effects and symptomatic rather than curative efficacy of allopathic system are again disappointing and made the public seek an alternative medical system. Governments in such countries are now reviving there older systems of medicine to overcome these lacunas fulfilling the basic health care needs.
Unani medicine founded by Hippocrates, developed much in Arabic countries during 8th to 14th centuries, travelled through Iran to India. It was propagated by Mughal empires here and gained a good fame. Still adhering to principles of Hippocartic medicine, it uses world wide range of naturally occurring drugs viz. herbal, animal and mineral origin. Apart from drugs, multiple therapeutic Unani regimenal procedures also play an important role in the management of varied ailments. It is the high time to rediscover its time-tested classical form and research the molecular basis of this pathy, using present tools and techniques.
